WILDLIFE

Knysna Elephant Park

Knysna is besieged by the natural beauty of the forests, lakes, estuary and sea. That means wildlife galore! It’s an everyday part of our lives. We’re most famous for the Brenton Blue Butterfly, the Loerie Bird, Dwarf Chameleons and the Knysna Seahorse.

When i lived in a city, my encounters with the wild translated into dodging pigeon poop:) Knysna, instead, is literally, and proverbially, the Garden of Eden. I live only 1km from the centre of town yet my fence borders a nature reserve and a small, farming community. The so-called, rare Loerie Bird is a regular guest along with Honey Birds, Guinea Fowl, Olive Thrushes and Fork-Tailed Drongoes (one even hovered centimeters from my hand, begging for a piece of cheese). Even the pigeons (Speckled Rock) are spectacularly coloured. Just imagine the world of Knysna if my back yard alone has over 80 bird species. Knysna is majickal!

Within half an hour’s drive, you could be visiting cheetahs, elephants, eagles, dolphins and wolves. Willing to drive up to an hour and you’ll find many game reserves. You can even walk with lions!
