Despite the South African multitude that sent off the Springboks from JHB to the World Cup Rugby 2011 in New Zealand, there’s been surprisingly little vibe about the games here in Knysna. There are some breakfast specials running but little promotion outside of that. However, last Sunday morning, i, whose no sport fanatic, surprisingly found myself, and approximately 40 others, having a breakfast beer at King’s Sports Bar for the Boks clash against Wales (which we, thankfully, won by a hair).
Locals will know that King’s Sports Bar was previously called The Shebeen and can be found in Pledge Square, just off the Main Road (opposite Knysna Mall). The bar got a revamp, a big screen and a bunch of television sets which satisfies the name change.
The owner, Andre King, says that because match times are so early, he has to judge the public’s response before advertizing the next match. Well, last Sunday was the busiest i’ve ever seen a bar in Knysna at 10am. Andre must have thought so as well because he’s open this Saturday at 7.30am for the Fiji versus South Africa game. The kick-off is at 8am.
By law, no liquor can be sold before 10am so King’s Sports Bar is offering Boerewors and Breakfast Rolls for R12. And they’ll throw in a free coffee to keep your throat wet. Then, at 10am, when Australia plays Ireland, you can get 2 x SAB pints for the price of 1.
I’m suggesting that you get yourself there and keep Knysna’s spirit alive by sharing in the good times!
