Aki von Glasow, Dylan the Dog and i got adopted by a bunch of children in their Rastafarian neighbourhood of Judah Square. Sadly, i don’t recall all their names but Michael and Empress were amongst them.
Initially, they were curious as to the photo shoot for Aki’s BSR website but it wasn’t long before they were kids happy to get attention. On day 2, they were as much part of us as our arms and legs because they went everywhere with us. They soon borrowed our cameras, generally forgetting to put the safety straps on their wrists when running up and down the tarred road. Whereas i’d have an oh-my-god-i-can’t-afford-to-replace-it-if-it-shatters moment, Aki would just smile.
Again, i was reminded how much i want to start a children’s photo project as was done in Calcutta in the documentary, Born into Brothels. It’s the project notion, not the circumstances because these kids are happy and loved by their families. There is a warmth to the Rastas.
