The long drought definitely ended with all the rain this past Winter. It’s continuance into Spring was a definite threat to the fun atmosphere of Leisure Isle Festival 2012. 3 days before, a weather report predicted rain every day except Saturday but, when it arrived, it was wet like the rest.
Having had my own weather challenges with events, i understood what the organizers must have been going through so i decided to support no matter what. It became a very pleasant, 30 minute walk there. Nature feels alive when it rains. Unfortunately, most of the stalls never blossomed. I abandoned the park for Cearn Hall where the ePap, drinks and books had taken refuge.
I was impressed with the smiley faces behind the counters who added positive cheer to us as we squeezed between one another in search of bargains. I was pleased to get a #1 ticket as the first person to have books held for them. I then repeated that by being the first to purchase coffee…and cheese scones with extra cheese in between as well as a cheese spread of sorts – yummy.
I was sad for the fact that fundraising would be crippled by the weather (there was some relief the next morning before the rain returned) but somehow, unbelievably, Leisure Isle Festival raised R95 000 for charity! I’m so impressed!
Here’s how the monies were approximately distributed:
- Hospice: R29 700
- e-Pap: R30 000
- Animal Welfare: R7 200
- Steenbok Nature Reserve: R17 000
- The Elderly: R7 800
