Digital Village will be rolling out a number of new free community hotspots along the Garden Route. It is expected that up to 20,000 people will be able to make daily use of this new free network, across 28 locations.
The Free WIFI project roll-out is being funded by the Western Cape Provincial Government as part of their broadband initiative. Free bandwidth used at the hotspots and backbone access to the various hotspots are being sponsored by Cloud Connect.
Each user will get 150 MB of fast, free and internet per day. Once the daily quota has been used up users can buy additional data vouchers at highly subsidised rates from their local grass-roots resellers like the corner spaza shop, etc.
Wikipedia and select government sites will be accessible for free from the network, even once the daily usage limit have been exhausted.
Digital Village is partnering with the Garden Route ICT Incubator and the George Municipality to provide a municipal portal that all citizens can access for free over the free WIFI network. The portal will allow users to report service delivery issues like broken street lamps, potholes, etc. Users will also be able to access municipal accounts, etc. It is hoped that this portal can also be rolled out to the Knysna and Mosselbay Municipalities.
Digital Village will also be partnering with local grass-roots based entrepreneurs like spaza shop owners, to sell hotspot vouchers in the various areas, at far below market related rates.
A new hotspot is being rolled out every week. It is expected that all the hotspots will be online by September 2015.
The locations of the Free WIFI hotspots in Knysna are as follows:
- Knysna CBD
- Knysna Waterfront
- Sedgefield CBD
Additional free WIFI hotspots will be added to the network as new funding becomes available.
