A car crash on the N2 near the turn-off to Old Cape Road in Knysna has driven from seeming disaster into a very good news story!
Last night, April 10, two locals, a man and his wife, were traveling towards town centre when the man fell asleep at the wheel. The car veered across the on-coming traffic lane and, at an angle, smashed through 3 barrier posts. The distance from the road to where the barrier lies in the Knysna Estuary is testimony to the force of impact.
The car landed on it’s side, partly on the rocks and in the estuary. The driver awoke to wet feet. Remarkably, he and his wife escaped serious injury, were only swollen and bruised.
Where the extra magic enters is from a German tourist group that was staying at Greenfire Lodge, the beautiful building set in the hill on the opposite site of the road. Margaret Hall, the manager, says that there was no hesitation from her 10 guests. They immediately leapt into action as she raced for the phone.
Smoke was coming from the car, making the wife fear it would explode. These German do-gooders formed a human chain to pull them up that steep wall.
A great Honda 4×4, seat belt awareness, fabulous airbags, a lack of traffic and pedestrians, and a lot of luck saved our locals but it’s the German angels that will make my heart remember this story.
NB: Please don’t drive when tired!
