The Knysna Art Society was first formed over 50 years ago. Early meetings were held in the “Art Centre” in Montague Street. The screens were wheeled down  the street to St George’s Church Hall where the first Annual Art Exhibitions  were held.

When the Old Gaol became vacant, the Art Society applied for and  were given a section for a Gallery. All renovations had to be paid by the  Society. An appeal was launched and the generous public of Knysna donated  the necessary funds. Today the Arts Society has some 300 members. It  organizes exhibitions for members annually, also an exhibition for all the  17 schools in Knysna. The gallery is let out to artists in available periods between these exhibitions. Demonstrations, workshops, and lessons are also organized through the Society for members.

The Knysna Arts and Crafts Society runs the Gallery on a non-profit basis as a service to the artists of Knysna. Knysna Municipality is a main sponsor.

The gallery has new exhibitions every 2-4 weeks, show-casing our  talented local artists. The complex also offers The Old Gaol Coffee Shop, The Art Room and various museum displays on Knysna’s rich and interesting history.
